Different Types Of Towing Services

JEC Transport • Jul 24, 2023

A vehicle breakdown can be highly inconvenient and stressful, especially if you're stranded on the road. In such a situation, a dependable towing service can help you safely transport your vehicle to a garage or your home. However, there are various types of towing services, each serving a unique purpose and catering to different kinds of vehicles. Understanding these can be beneficial in dealing with vehicle breakdowns. Let's explore each one in detail.

Flatbed Towing

Flatbed towing is one of the most popular and widespread methods. It involves a truck equipped with a flatbed on the back. This method is typically used for transporting cars, trucks and larger vehicles, and it's highly regarded due to its safety and convenience.

The vehicle is driven or winched onto the flatbed, where it's firmly secured for transport. This method eliminates the possibility of damage to the vehicle as no part touches the ground during transit.

Hook-and-Chain Towing

The hook-and-chain method is one of the earliest forms of towing and is less common today. It involves wrapping chains around the vehicle's frame or axle before hoisting it off the ground.

This method is cheap and efficient, but it risks damaging the vehicle. Hence, it's usually reserved for junk vehicles.

Wheel-Lift Towing

Wheel-lift towing is a more modernised version of the hook-and-chain method. It involves using a metal yoke to cradle either the front or rear wheels of a vehicle. The other pair of wheels remain on the ground during the towing process.

While it might cause minor wear and tear to the tyres, wheel-lift towing is far less damaging than the hook-and-chain method. It's also a cheaper alternative to flatbed towing and is suitable for short-distance tows.

Integrated Towing

Integrated towing involves trucks that are specially designed for heavy-duty purposes. They're typically used for transporting buses, trucks and other large vehicles.

These trucks have extra axles for added stability and are integrated with arms that are embedded into the core of the truck. They are often used for rigorous towing tasks.

Motorcycle Towing

Motorcycle towing is a specific service that involves towing two-wheeled vehicles like motorcycles and bicycles. These require unique equipment and trailers that can safely and efficiently transport motorcycles without damaging them.
